Ed Sheeran addressed the Israel-Gaza conflict and the recent controversy surrounding his Loop Tour during his Saturday night concert at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Speaking to the crowd before beginning his set, Sheeran said the situation in Gaza was catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate. He also condemned the October 7, 2023 attacks in Israel and acknowledged the suffering of civilians. During the remarks, he said he had generally avoided becoming a political commentator because he wanted his concerts to focus on music, unity, and connection.
The comments followed a turbulent week for the tour after Macklemore was removed from upcoming dates following pro-Palestinian remarks during performances in New Jersey. The tour promoter previously said venues had indicated they would not host shows featuring Macklemore.
Sheeran said the decision was not his and expressed concern about venues influencing what artists can say onstage. Several supporting performers later withdrew from the tour.
The Philadelphia concert continued as scheduled, with Sheeran telling fans he was still listening, learning, and considering ways to support people affected by the conflict.
